(Before I get started, I do want to note that I missed the first half inning of the game due to Chicago traffic and car trouble so that did speed up things.) My friend and I made the trip to Chicago last night for the Twins at White Sox, which so happened to be a Sunday Night Baseball game. Despite the results which the Sox won 10-1, I want to speak about my first experience at Rate Field which surprisingly to me was actually sort of positive.
Negatives:
Just to get these out of the way first I do want to get what I think could be improved on. Honestly I think the biggest thing is accessibility in terms of how to park. Being an out of towner, the roads around the lots were blocked in and out. It took until late for my friend and I to find a lot that we could get into easily. Also compared to Target Field and the other stadium I went to in American Family Field, they want you to go to a certain gate which kinda was confusing but I guess at the same time did make it easier for crowds to not create jams.
Positives:
Now here is the positives, there really was no bad view it looked like. I actually did like the acoustics of the stadium along with its aura. Chicago’s concourses are big and there was walking space to be able to walk. With the White Sox having a surprise season this year as they are leading the AL Central with a 75-68 record, the crowd was packed and loud, unfortunately for me and my friend it was against the Twins but it was fun to see a fanbase that has a lot of hope after a stretch of years that they had no hope in. I’ve heard negative things about the fan and worker interactions but I had none. When my friend told me to get to the field after his car briefly stopped when waiting to enter lot Z. I asked the worker if I could get there and he jokingly said “F No, but then smiled and said yes. He also noticed my Shadow the Hedgehog shirt I had under my jersey and said it was a cool shirt.” When I got concessions at their “The Classics” stand they were fast in how they operate but treated me nice. The Food also was priced well and was good for the cheap price. I got a coke and a bowl of garlic fries at the stand and in total with tips it only came out to $20. For example at Target Field. A thing of cheese curds alone is almost $10.
Overall, the experience was fine and I wish I could experience Rate Field again in a more relaxed weekend where I can get the full experience. If you’re scared of the Southside neighborhood that’s understandable, but around the field is packed, and full of security. Honestly felt totally safe in the lot, and didn’t realize any difference then being around Minneapolis after a Twins game. I give Rate Field a solid 7/10.
