If you’re a CFB fan like me, you might have heard of the 2007 College Football Season. Which is dubbed one of the craziest seasons in the sports history. There have been plenty of weeks since that have had craziness but none that I have remembered are like what took place last week.
Five top 10 teams fell
Yep, you heard that correctly. Five teams that were ranked in the top 10 all lost, No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Alabama and No. 7 Texas were those teams. Now Notre Dame and Indiana were part of matchups that a guaranteed top 10 team would lose as their opponents were No. 8 BYU and No. 4 Ohio State. However Alabama lost at No. 14 Tennessee, which was the third straight season that the Tide fell at Neyland. Then No. 7 Texas lost at home to unranked Florida which was the second straight season that UT lost to an unranked Florida, but the most shocking one of all happened in Athens, Georgia as unranked Auburn beat No. 1 Georgia on a walkoff field goal.
It’s the second straight week that No. 1 fell to an Unranked team
It’s not impossible to see the No. 1 team in CFB lose in back-to-back weeks. I remember it happening in 2010 when it South Carolina beat No. 1 Alabama and Wisconsin beat No. 1 Ohio State. However it is rare for the No. 1 team to lose back-to-back against unranked teams. No. 1 Texas lost 27-24 to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry game off of walkoff field goal, and it was the same score in Auburn’s upset which was off a walkoff field goal over No. 1 Georgia too. The last time No. 1 lost to back to back unranked opponents happened in 1990 when Notre Dame lost to Stanford and Michigan to Michigan State.
It’s the first time No. 1 and No. 2 fell in the same weekend since 2017
With Auburn and No. 8 BYU’s upsets over No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Notre Dame, it marked the first time we saw the top two teams in the rankings fall on the same week since 2017. It was when Auburn knocked off No. 1 Alabama and Pittsburgh beat No. 2 Miami in the last week of the regular season that year. Sort of Ironic, Miami who survived a chaotic game vs Florida State jumped up to No. 1 with all the chaos this past Saturday and the BYU Cougars sit behind at No. 2. Also Ironic that Auburn was part of upsetting No. 1 Georgia. I believe in 2017, the Tigers also upset the No. 1 Bulldogs which makes this past week even more interesting.
Indiana lost for the first time in over a year and it was Cignetti’s first ever home loss.
When No. 4 Ohio State escaped No. 5 Indiana 19-15 on Saturday, the Buckeyes ended a 22-game winning streak for the Hoosiers dating back to the beginning of 2025. It was also the first time in his three years that Head Coach Curt Cignetti lost a home game in his two and a half seasons as IU’s head man. However it couldn’t have came in a worse way for the Hoosiers. After falling down 19-7 on a great fourth down touchdown catch from Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith, the Hoosiers scored a TD of their own along with converting a 2-pt try to make it 19-15. Indiana after stuffing the Ohio State offense thanks to the injury to QB Julian Sayin, got the ball late in the 4th with a chance to win the game. IU got down into OSU territory and on fourth down with just over a minute left, it looked like IU QB Josh Hoover found WR Nick Marsh for a go ahead touchdown. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, Marsh’s left foot stepped out of bounds first before he gained full control so it was ruled incomplete and that was how IU had their first loss since 2024.
No. 8 BYU with the help of a controversial call pulled off upset of No. 2 Notre Dame
When BYU upset the No. 2 Irish 28-24 for their biggest home win in quite some time. It came with some controversy. First on the incomplete pass that ended the game, the refs missed a potential PI call that should have been called according to ABC’s rules analyst. Then there was revealed to have been one second still on the clock when the ball hit the ground but the Big 12 refs let it go down. The conference themselves admitted that they messed up. But either way the Cougars got one of the biggest wins in school history to jump up to No. 2 in the standings while Notre Dame had another tough loss that might keep them out of the playoff again.
